5 Ways to Travel for Less
by SGL Financial
The end is near!
Winter is almost over and you can feel spring just around the corner.
And, as winter fades, ideas of travel and vacationing come to the fore. After all, you’ve spent the ‘dark period’ of winter hard at work in your business or at home, and now it’s time for some special time to take in the sunshine and light. Whether you’re planning a family road trip or talking to your travel agent in preparation for that all-inclusive resort you’ve had your eye on, the question of cost is always waiting there to be considered. Is there a way to spend less and get more? Here are some of the ways that I’ve been able to take more trips and vacations each year without breaking my bank.
1. I Always Set a Budget: I’ve found if I don’t set a spending budget while I’m on vacation I always end up spending more out of pocket than I planned. I find, when I’m really relaxed, it’s easy for me to become relaxed about my spending and that I’m more likely to spend more and indulge in impulse buys. So, I make a budget for transportation, lodging, food, activities and the unexpected. When I know my budget I can relax about money, and vacations are all about relaxing.
2. I Smile With My Miles: If you have a credit card that accrues miles or points for travel, cash them in and use them like I do! I know that it’s nice to see the miles and points stack up but they are there to be used. Don’t be shy and save that extra dollar with the free airfare.
3. I Fly Flexible: I’m a best deal shopper and I find that if I’m flexible with my travel dates I can save, in some cases, big time. Although it might be difficult for you hard core planners to be flexible on your travel dates, try and get out of your comfort zone. It’s nice to see the bank account go down far less that it would otherwise if you stick to a schedule.
4. I’m a B&B Boy: Hotel lodging can get pricey, especially if you have a larger family or group you’re traveling with. I always shop the B&B market and I almost always find special offers that save me money. And, I get double the warmth and cultural intimacy for half the price of a hotel.
5. I Zig When Everyone Else Zags: The majority of people take vacation time during the same times of the year. Usually because the kids are out of school or it’s a slower time at work giving you the flexibility to take time off. The problem with traveling at these times is that you pay through the nose. Although it takes a little more planning, I find some of the best deals and accommodations in the off season. And, frankly, I have a better time because there are less people, giving me more freedom to do the things I want to do.
So, have you got the urge to get up and go? After writing this letter I’m all fired up to make some plans! Oh, one more thing. Even if you’re on a tight budget, there’s always a place to go where you can enjoy a vacation, and spend some great time with your family or loved ones which, after all, is what truly matters.
And, don’t forget your camera! I’d love to see some of those memorable moments, so next time we meet we can share a smile!
